“Survey
and Analysis of Remote Sensing Market: Aerial and Spaceborne”
In
September of 2004 National Oceanographic and Atmospheric
Administration (NOAA’s Satellite and Information Service)
contracted with Global Marketing Insights, Inc. to provide
comprehensive review of the international remote sensing
market for aerial and spaceborne sensors. As of August of
2005 1,547 detailed twenty-page online surveys and 250 personal
interviews had been completed with respondents from the
US, Canada, Europe, Africa, Asia, Australia, Central America
and South America. Over 2,000 pages of statistical data
were produced from eight sectors studied: Aerial Film, Aerial
Digital, Aerial Sensors, Satellite, Value Added Hardware
and Software Providers, Commercial End Users and Government
The
Survey Responders were asked to identify the technical advances
impacting their business the most in years 2010 and 2015,
and in Satellite Sectors they have highlighted “Greater
and Easier Access to Remote Sensing Data” The following
statement is the comment most often received in personal
interviews: “There will be greater need for higher
resolution imagery and the trend will continue toward the
use of digital. Technology will be easier to access, become
faster, and be more available at a lower cost.”
Remote
sensing data is expected to become a commodity since the
prices are anticipated to decrease as the supply increases.
For example, the Aerial Film sector has already become extremely
cost-competitive with a large number of aerial mapping companies
competing for the same projects. On the other hand, there
are only a few of satellite remote sensing companies offering
unique type of data, so due to the limited supply the prices
have remained high.
Political,
economic and environmental trends that are anticipated to
have the greatest impact on remote sensing industry are:
National Defense/Homeland Security Issues, Licensing Issues,
Required Cadastral Mapping, International Trade, Global
Warming, Outsourcing/Privatization, Natural Resources/Heritage
Protection, Open Skies Initiative, Recovery of Investments
and Prime Orbit Availability.
Future
business prospects of the satellite remote sensing industry
are of particular interest to many. Survey respondents were
asked to quantify the revenue of their departments from
the US and from international sources, and the revenue of
their entire companies from US and international sources.
The results indicated the number of departments with less
than $ 100,000 revenue is expected to decrease while the
number of higher revenue departments and companies is projected
to increase.
When
asked to pick their top applications for the satellite data,
respondents most frequently selected Environmentally related
applications with Environmental Monitoring/Management ranked
on top with 51% responders followed by National Resource
Management (46%) Land Management/Development (41%) Forestry
(37%) Security (National Defense/Homeland Security 36%)
Utilities (29%) Damage Assessment (29%) Engineering (29%)
Cadastral (28%) and Sustainable Development (24%) In addition
to this the satellite sector responders were asked to indicate
their market type. Over 40% were commercial companies, followed
by 14% Government-Defense, 12% Government-Civil, 8% Academic
and 2% Non-profit organizations.
The
companies were asked to project their revenues in 2010 and
2015 broken between US and international sources and by
department and company. The satellite sector appears to
do greater business in the international market then the
other sectors with 22% of the Satellite sector responders
selecting the international departmental category of “greater
then $ 5 million” in revenue.
The
future of the geospatial technologies appears to be brighter
than ever. The material in this study strongly supports
the notion that the improved supply of the remote sensing
data is key business ingredient for value-added service
providers. The greater the variety of data available and
the lower the price of data - the more likely is that they
will continue to increase their productivity and expand
their user base.
